Prudhoe Bay to Ushuaia on a motorbike

Hello my name is Nick and it is my job to talk about bikes!

During our big trip away I am going to talk about the BMW GS Adventure and all the optional extras, I am going to talk about motorcycling in general and I will combine these posts with my day to day/ week to week experiences on the trip from the top to the bottom of the world. On the other hand Ivanka will talk about ‘gadgets’ combined with her traveling experiences.

To start things off, here is a little more information about me and my motorbikes…

What I look for in a motorcycle is a bike which is durable, functional, not too fast in terms of top speed and acceleration, plus it needs to be comfortable (I prefer the upright riding position). I must admit I have always favoured a bike which is capable of traveling off-road and I do like the idea of taking lots of gear with me.

The reasons for this will become apparent later as you learn more about me and the trip.

My last bike before the GS Adventure was a Honda Africa Twin 750 cc which was a great all round bike; very nippy to commute on every day, something which is easy to look after and a bike which is capable off going long distances. You can also pick it up if you drop it.  It will just keep on going and going! I actually sold the bike to a Kiwi fella who was using it to get home on from the UK so it was going to serve it’s purpose well and I had a couple of adventures around Europe on it.

Prior to this my bikes have been a Yamaha TY 80, a TY 175, A Fantic 80 and 175, a Kawasaki KX 80 (these were bikes that I did grow up on) and then lastly a CG 175 which was my first road bike. My first road bike served me well at Uni, I had it for a couple of years and it used to get me to lectures and parties etc. A sad end to this engagement though as one day I realized it was missing/ stolen while living and studying in Hull. The thing was I had been partying so hard with fellow students that I can’t actually recall when it had gone missing – days and weeks were quite often very blurry.

My current motorcycle is the Land Rover of adventure tourers and it has served me well for over three years. It’s big, it has road presence, it looks rugged on Brighton’s streets dressed with crash bars and optional extras, and I can trust it implicitly.  It has a big fuel tank, hand guards, White Power rear suspension, optional BMW panniers and racks, 12V adapter in the cockpit, EVO brakes, capable of running on lower-octane fuel, and a cool-looking black protector on the beak. I have also recently added a better spec exhaust, taken off the CAT so I am better prepared for altitude and the different types of fuels in South America.

So from June 2011 I will be regularly posting on this site and my bias will be drawn to the subject of motorcycling, anything motorcycle related will be what I will talk about and I will take great pleasure in telling you of my journey and the adventures I have together with Ivanka, my fantastic pillion – and now my wife :)

Vivo en Ushuaia desde hace mas de 12 años y disfruto de andar en motocicleta desde hace mas de 22 años.En estos momentos tengo una BMW R60/5 y una KTM LC4 640. Actualmente estoy montando una pequeña empresa de alquiler de motocicletas y soluciones de logistica y repuestos para viajeros (la pagina web aún no esta funcionando) quedo a tu disposicion para lo que necesites ya sea reservas de alojamiento informacion de clima o logistica de Cubiertas repuestos como así tambien el embalaje y regreso por barco de tu moto si así lo deseas.
